Cervicogenic Headaches

Cervicogenic headaches are caused by dysfunction of the muscles, joints, ligaments or tendons of the neck, upper back, shoulder and face. They are the most common type of headache and can impact anyone, but are more frequently seen in people with pre-existing neck issues. Cervicogenic headaches can present as:

  • Dull aching pain that may between the base of the neck, into the temples, or behind the eyes.
  • Pain can be difficult to localise or pinpoint
  • Pain that can build throughout the day if associated with work or poor posture
  • Symptoms may be associated with increased stress levels
  • Associated neck pain or stiffness

With the correct diagnosis, treatment and advice, cervicogenic headaches generally ease with a few weeks. Our osteopaths can help by:

  • Using hands on treatment to improve joint range of motion, mobility and decrease muscle tension through the neck, upper back and shoulders.
  • Provide advice about prevention of further headaches such as self treatment strategies, stress relief, exercises to strengthen the neck and shoulder muscles and improve mobility, postural and ergonomic advice, and manual handling.
