Exercising for a healthier mind

One of the most prevalent problems in modern society is poor mental health. While it seems like more people are talking about the issue more than ever, there is still a great deal of stigma surrounding mental illnesses. This often results in people not seeking help, or receiving treatment. Sadly, 1 in 5 Australians will experience a mental health problem each year. Therefore, it needs to  be talked about.

It is often underestimated just how important exercise is for good mental health. Some studies have even suggested that exercise is more effective than pharmacological intervention in alleviating depressive symptoms! However for most people, the answer to effectively managing their mental health is a combination of medication, exercise, and good support systems of family, friends, and professionals.

Keep in mind:

  • Set short-term realistic goals for exercising each week (eg. A 15-20 minute walk each day). Little chunks of work spread out are easier to face as it’s not as daunting as ‘a two hour workout’.
  • Remember it  can take time before you start to notice the benefits and changes exercise results in. Don’t let that stop you from starting. Just know you may see changes and it does get easier. Many studies have shown a significant reduction in depression after eight weeks or more of exercise.
  • It may be helpful to work with an educated professional to create an exercise plan and routine modified to you and your needs.
