Menopause

Menopause is a natural phase in a woman’s life, marking the end of menstrual cycles. This transition may bring about a range of physical and emotional changes, such as hot flushes, joint stiffness, sleep disturbances, and mood fluctuations. However, these experiences vary widely, and each woman may navigate this phase differently.

Menopause typically unfolds in three stages:

  1. Perimenopause: This is the transitional phase leading up to menopause. During this time, hormone levels fluctuate, and menstrual cycles can become irregular. Symptoms like hot flushes, night sweats and mood swings may begin.
  2. Menopause: This stage is defined by the absence of menstruation for 12 consecutive months. Hormone levels continue to decline, and symptoms may persist or intensify.
  3. Post menopause: After menopause, the body adjusts to lower hormone levels. While some symptoms may ease, others, like joint pain and stiffness, might become more pronounced.

 How osteopathy may help

Osteopathy is a whole body approach that focuses on enhancing the body’s natural ability to heal itself. Through gentle manual techniques, osteopaths aim to improve mobility, reduce tension, and promote overall wellbeing. Here’s how osteopathy may be beneficial during menopause:

  • Managing joint and muscle pain: Hormonal changes during menopause may lead to joint stiffness and muscle aches. Osteopathic treatment may help to relieve tension in the muscles and improve joint mobility, making daily activities more comfortable.
  • Promoting movement and exercise for wellbeing: As the body navigates the changes of menopause, maintaining muscle and bone health becomes increasingly important. Osteopaths can provide tailored exercise advice to support healthy movement, improve balance, and enhance overall physical wellbeing. Regular movement not only supports muscle and bone strength but also contributes to better sleep quality and stress reduction.
  • Enhancing sleep quality: Menopause-related symptoms like night sweats and discomfort can disrupt sleep. Osteopathic care may assist in promoting relaxation and improving sleep quality by addressing physical discomfort.
  • Reducing stress and tension: The emotional changes during menopause can sometimes lead to increased stress. Osteopathy can support stress management by working on the body’s musculoskeletal system to promote relaxation. Beyond physical treatments, osteopaths can offer advice on various stress management strategies that complement their hands-on care. This may include recommending breathing exercises, relaxation apps, or mindfulness practices that help manage the emotional challenges often associated with menopause. By integrating these techniques into your daily routine, you can support both your physical and mental health during this transition.

 A personalised approach

Every woman’s experience with menopause is unique. Osteopaths provide personalised care, taking into account your specific symptoms and overall health. It’s essential to consult with a healthcare professional before starting any new treatment, including osteopathy, to ensure it’s appropriate for your individual needs.
